We firmly believe the youth are our future 1st and 2nd XI and will lead us back to our former glory. We also confident we can continue to produce county and national standard players as we did with Mark Butcher, Alisdair Brown, Michael Burgess and Michael Carberry.
The talent in the older age groups at Cheam CC continues to encourage us however we see an issue that goes across English cricket of teenage cricketers giving up the game or being left to navigate their own way in adult cricket or U19 cricket after they turn 16. The added elements of exam pressure, important life decisions and new opportunities and interests often leaves incredible talent being stopped in its tracks.
When the Chairman and Vice-Chairman sat down to discuss the future of Cheam CC we were both adamant that we needed to bridge the gap for youngsters between the ages of 16-21 to allow them to continue to enjoy cricket with their peers around their studies, improve their skills through effective coaching and not be left isolated in adult cricket.
Therefore we launched the Cheam CC Performance Academy. The Academy caters for youngsters aged between 16-21 with their own coach-led training nights on Friday evenings led by Monty Sadejwa.
The Performance Academy will consist of:
- Enhanced small groups of 5-6 youngsters
- Technical based coaching and development
- Game play experience in U19, T20 and conventional format with specific team role development and building towards an effective Trust Development side for next year.
- A clear planned pathway for progression in Adult cricket with aims and targets devised with the players
In 2020 due to COVID-19 the programme will be a 7-week training schedule on Fridays starting the first week of July from 6.30-8pm. Places will be limited to 15 individuals by invite only. Currently we are at full capacity however if you wish to express an interest for next year please contact [email protected]
The cost this year will be just £75 including a performance squad Cheam CC coloured shirt and cap and this of course will also form the individuals membership for the year including access to nets and matches later in the year subject to the ECB’s approval.
This will be a multi-year group project and the individuals in this group will be mentored, promoted and trained to be elite 1st XI and 2nd XI and county standard players in the near future. We believe we have some great talent and want to give them every opportunity to get better and fulfil their potential in an affordable manner.
