From Peaches Close to the World Stage: Famous Alumni

From Peaches Close to the World Stage

Cheam Cricket Club has always been more than a local club. For over a century, Peaches Close has been a nursery for some of the finest cricketers Britain and the world have produced. From this quiet corner of Surrey, players have gone on to represent their counties, their nations — and in some cases, the greatest stages in world cricket.

Mark Butcher is arguably Cheam's most celebrated alumnus. A left-handed opening batsman of the highest class, Butcher made his Surrey debut in 1992 and went on to represent England in 71 Test matches, amassing 4,288 runs. His name will forever be associated with one of the greatest individual performances in Ashes history — an unbeaten 173 at Headingley in 2001 that guided England to an improbable chase of 315 against Australia.

Since retiring from playing, Butcher has become a prominent voice in cricket broadcasting, working as a pundit and commentator for Sky Sports and Test Match Special. He remains one of the sport's most respected analysts — a Cheam product still shaping how cricket is talked about at the highest level.

Michael Carberry

Michael Carberry came through Cheam before developing into one of Hampshire's most dependable opening batsmen. A technically sound left-hander, Carberry earned his England call-up and went on to open the batting in the 2013–14 Ashes series in Australia, scoring 281 runs across six Tests including a patient 60 in Adelaide.

Carberry's story extends well beyond the boundary. In 2016, he was diagnosed with a heart tumour and made a remarkable return to cricket, becoming an inspiration to players and fans alike. He has since been a powerful advocate for mental health awareness in sport.

Bas de Leede

Netherlands (KNCB) | T20 World Cup 2022 & 2024 | IPL: Chennai Super Kings

One of our most recent alumni to grace the international stage, Bas de Leede played for Cheam during his time in England before establishing himself as the Netherlands' premier all-rounder. An aggressive right-arm seamer and capable lower-order bat, de Leede has appeared at ICC T20 World Cups in 2022 and 2024 — and earned an IPL contract with Chennai Super Kings, placing him among the elite of Twenty20 cricket.

De Leede's trajectory — from a club ground in Cheam to the Indian Premier League — is a reminder that international cricket truly comes from unexpected places. We are enormously proud to have played a part in his journey.

Greg Lamb

Zimbabwe Cricket | International representative

Greg Lamb played his formative cricket in England, including time at Cheam, before returning to Zimbabwe and carving out a career as an international cricketer. His journey from Surrey club cricket to national representative colours is a proud chapter in CCC's history.

Adam Brown

Derbyshire CCC | First-class cricket

Adam Brown honed his game at Cheam before going on to represent Derbyshire in first-class cricket. A solid performer at county level, Brown is another example of the professional talent that this club has consistently produced and sent up the cricket pathway.

Rob Burgess

County cricket

Rob Burgess progressed from Cheam to county and representative cricket, continuing the club's long tradition of developing players for the professional game. His career is further testament to the quality of cricket that Peaches Close has always produced.

We Don't Just Produce Internationals

We have had some of the greatest cricketers who ever lived grace our ground at Peaches Close. These legends didn't come through our youth system — but they played here, and for a moment, Cheam Cricket Club was part of their story too.

Imran Khan

Pakistan | 88 Tests, 3,807 runs & 362 wickets | 1992 World Cup Winner | Knighted

One of cricket's all-time greats, Imran Khan visited and played at Cheam Cricket Club's ground at Peaches Close. The Pakistan captain led his country to the 1992 Cricket World Cup and is universally regarded as one of the finest all-rounders the game has ever produced — a bowler of genuine pace and a batsman of class and authority. Our archive photograph above captures him at this very ground.

Sir Garfield Sobers

West Indies | 93 Tests, 8,032 runs & 235 wickets | Wisden Cricketer of the Century

Named Wisden's Cricketer of the Century, Sir Garfield Sobers is the greatest all-rounder in the history of cricket. A devastating batsman, a wicket-taker across three different bowling styles, and a brilliant fielder, Sobers graced Peaches Close during visits to the area. Our archive photograph above captures Sir Garfield at our ground in Cheam — a distinction that speaks to the remarkable reach of this club's history.

Do you know of another Cheam Cricket Club alumnus who has gone on to great things? Get in touch — we would love to add their story to this page.
