Five Surrey players in England's one-day squad for Pakistan – and how young Sutton cricketers can start this winter

England's one-day side heads to Pakistan this month with five Surrey players in the squad. Here is who is going, when the matches are, and how young cricketers in Sutton and Cheam can get started indoors this winter.

Surrey will be well represented when England's one-day side travels to Pakistan. Gus Atkinson, Sam Curran, Will Jacks and Jamie Overton have all been named in a 16-player squad for a tri-series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, along with Henry Crocombe, who joins Surrey from Sussex on 1 November. Harry Brook captains the side.

The series runs from 18 to 31 October, with matches in Rawalpindi and Lahore. Surrey report that Curran returns after a groin injury late in the domestic season, while Atkinson, Jacks and Overton all played in England's recent one-day series win over Sri Lanka at the Kia Oval. You can read Surrey's squad announcement here.

There was good news for the women's game at the Kia Oval too. England all-rounder Freya Kemp, who was born in London, has signed a multi-year deal with Surrey ahead of the 2027 season after two years at Hampshire (Surrey's report).

Where it all starts

Every international cricketer was once a beginner learning to hold a bat and bowl a straight ball. For young cricketers in Sutton and Cheam, winter is a good time to start, and our indoor programme is already under way.

Sessions run every Tuesday evening at Overton Grange School on Stanley Road, Sutton, which has full-size indoor nets. School Years 3 to 6 train from 6.10pm to 7.30pm with a softball, and ages 12 to 16 from 7.40pm to 9.00pm with a hardball. Block A runs until 8 December and carries on through half term. Block B runs from 12 January to 16 March 2027, and starts with another free Open Day.

You don't have to wait until January. New players are welcome to join part-way through the current block, and as well as full blocks there is a three-session trial and single drop-in sessions. Younger players have all equipment provided and just need trainers and comfortable clothes; players aged 12 to 16 bring their own hardball kit. There are no trials, bursaries are available, and girls are welcome throughout – see our girls cricket page for more.

Full dates, venues and prices are on our Winter Programme page, and you can book a place here.

Follow England in Pakistan from 18 October – and if your child fancies following in Surrey's footsteps, a Tuesday night in Sutton is a fine place to begin.
